PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discrete magnetic read/write head with a magnetic resistance sensor in order to realize narrow track width, high sensitivity and low noise. SOLUTION: In addition to a first magnetic domain control layer 107 for aligning a magnetizing direction in a designated direction for a free layer 101 of a magnetic resistance effect film 2, the magnetic head is equipped with a second magnetic domain control layer 109 for generating a magnetic field in its opposite direction. With this differential bias method, a vertical bias magnetic field for the central part, which becomes excessively strong, is reduced with the narrow track width while avoiding a reduction in fixed magnetic field at a track end part. The first and the second magnetic domain control layers 107, 109 are realized by a combination of hard and soft magnetic materials. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
