PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a starting control device for an internal combustion engine for obtaining driving torque needed for starting and is adaptable even to an internal combustion engine with a small number of cylinders. SOLUTION: The starting control device detects the piston stop position of a cylinder upon stopping of the internal combustion engine. When the piston is detected to be in a position impossible or difficult for the internal combustion engine to self-start, the starting control device injects fuel to the cylinder stopping in a compression stroke and ignites it, to reversely rotate the internal combustion engine and adjusting it to a suitable position for self-starting, then the staring control device injects fuel to the cylinder in an expansion stroke and ignites it, to rotate the internal combustion engine in the normal direction. When self-starting is made possible by reverse rotation, or when the piston is in a position where friction at starting is reduced, the internal combustion engine is started by fuel injection and ignition in the expansion stroke.
