PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new polymer containing fine metal particles dispersed in an organic polymer in a size of nanometer level and effective for improving various properties of an organic/inorganic composite material containing conventional amorphous or partially crystalline organic polymer, a method for producing the polymer, a new metal ion-containing polymer suitable as a production intermediate and a method for producing the metal ion-containing polymer. SOLUTION: A layered crystalline organic polymer having an acidic group and/or its ammonium salt such as ammonium salt of polymuconic acid is mixed with a substance containing a metal ion such as an alkali metal ion to obtain a metal ion-containing polymer having a structure containing the metal ion intercalated between the layers of the layered organic polymer having acidic group. The product is optionally subjected to a metal ion exchange reaction and the metal ion is reduced to form fine metal particles and obtain the polymer containing fine metal particles dispersed in the crystalline organic polymer.
