1,124,867. Friction clutches; reverse gear. TWIN DISC Inc. 23 March, 1967 [31 March, 1966], No. 13736/67. Headings F2C and F2D. A multiplate clutch in series with a cone clutch comprises interleaved friction discs 22, 23 respectively splined to an output hub 11 and to an axially slidable two-part intermediate member 13, 14 which has oppositely inclined conical surfaces 17, 18 engageable between driving cones 9, 8. A spring 26 normally separates the two parts 13, 14 of the intermediate member to disengage the multiplate clutch and a spring 25 separates the conical surfaces 9, 18. The clutch is engaged by supplying pressure fluid to a chamber 2, whereupon a piston 3 fast with the clutch cone 8 moves right to engage the clutch. The spring 25 may be stronger than the spring 26 so that, after initial engagement between the conical clutch surfaces 8, 17, the multiplate clutch is engaged before the conical surfaces 9, 18 or the spring 26 may be stronger than the spring 25 so that the conical surfaces 9, 18 are engaged prior to the multiplate clutch. The clutch may form part of a double clutch for a reverse gear (Fig. 2, not shown) in which one clutch (C3) directly connects the input and output shafts (5, 10) whilst the other clutch (C4) connects the input shaft (5) to the output shaft (10) through a countershaft reversing train (16c ... 16h). The clutch plates may be immersed in lubricating oil which is fed to a chamber (P) formed by one part (13) of the intermediate member and a radial disc (30). |
