PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for chlorinating the aromatic ring of ortho-xylene. SOLUTION: This method for chlorinating the aromatic ring of ortho-xylene is provided by using a chlorinating agent in the presence of at least one kind of a Friedel Crafts catalyst and a chloro-substituted 2,8-dimethylphenoxathiin as a promoter. As the promoter, preferably tetrahalogenated 2,8-dimethylphenoxathiin, especially 1,3,7,9-tetrachloro-2,8-dimethylphenoxathiin expressed by the formula, is used. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
