PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nucleic acid probe and a primer for use in the genetic diagnosis of hypertension.

SOLUTION: A nucleic acid molecule as the probe or primer, which is capable of detecting, in human superoxide dismutase 3 gene, the mutation of a cytosine residue(C) positioned upstream of 6797 nucleotide relative to the translation starting point of the gene into thymine residue(T), comprises a nucleotide fragment hybridizable with a polynucleotide having the mutation in a polynucleotide comprising the nucleotide arrangement of the promoter domain of the gene or a polynucleotide complementary thereto.
