PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device which urges a user to replace a light source when the light source is judged unusable due to the decrease in the level of white reference data even if repetition of reading of the white reference data is executed, in the image reader. SOLUTION: White reference reading data are prepared with the averaged white reference data averaged at a white reference data averaging processing part 60 and they are stored in a line buffer 29. The maximum value and the minimum value of the white reference data are judged at an arithmetic processing part 64. Further, results obtained by processing the white reference data at a level data judgment processing part 62 and a Min data hold processing part 63 are stored in a white reference level data judgment storage part 61. A message to urge the user to replace the light source is displayed on a display panel when the white reference data is incapable of reaching the level at the white reference level data judgment storage part 61.
