PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color image forming apparatus correcting color smearing at low cost and at high precision by accurately detecting a detecting mark for detection of color smearing formed on a recording medium or an intermediate transfer medium. SOLUTION: In the color image forming apparatus 1, reference marks 66A to 66F are formed on an intermediate transfer belt 51. The reference marks 66A to 66F are detected by a mark detecting part 8. On correcting the color smearing based on the detected result, the mark detecting part 8 is provided with a light source 71 radiating light on the reference marks 66A to 66F, a lens 72 restricting the light distribution of the radiated light from the light source 71 to an orientation which is approximately constant and an optical sensor 74 detecting the reflected radiated light reflected by the reference marks 66A to 66F. Therefore, the quantity of the reflected light can be detected at a high precision and at high output, deviation in detection movement due to vertical movement of the intermediate transfer belt 51 is suppressed and the detecting sensitivity of the reference marks 66A to 66F can be improved.
