PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an observing method and an observing apparatus which can observe the entire surface of the inner wall in a red-hot state in the carbonization chamber of a coke oven with a sufficient resolution to find a damaged portion and grasp its position and state, and can render the imaging part of the observing apparatus compact. SOLUTION: The method of observing the inner wall of a coke oven carbonization chamber comprises arranging an imaging device 1 having a linear or slit-like visual field and a mirror surface 7 in such a manner as to pick up an image of the inner wall of the carbonization chamber to be formed by reflection by the mirror surface 7 in the visual field of the imaging device 1 to take an image of it, the imaging device 1 and the mirror surface 7 being integrally movable upwards and downwards and in the oven length direction by a gyratory arm 10 and the like; successively tying the imaged data correspondingly to the movement distances in the oven length direction; and furthermore repeating the same imaging while changing upwards and downwards positions in the carbonization chamber to thereby form these images of the inner wall of the carbonization chamber having a wide area into one sheet of image, and the observing apparatus is disclosed.
