ENCODING METHOD AND APPARATUS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem such as pseudo synchronism or out-of-synchronism caused by the erroneous detection of a synchronizing code in an encoding apparatus.

SOLUTION: The encoding apparatus has a multiplexer 111 for generating a multiplexed code string 201 by multiplexing a plurality of kinds of variable length codes obtained by compression-encoding an image signal and an output encoder 200 for assembling an output code string 205 by inputting the multiplexed code string 201, and the output encoder 200 inserts the synchronizing code to any one of a plurality of synchronizing code inserting positions cyclically predetermined in the output code string 205 according to a synchronizing code insertion request signal 203 and inserts information indicating the boundary of the multiplexed code string 201 into the output code string 205.
