PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine starting system in which a pinion gear is gently made to abut on a ring gear constantly and stably regardless of individual difference, while delay in an engine start time is prevented. SOLUTION: The engine starting system comprises: the pinion gear 1; a pressing force providing means 2 providing, to the inion gear 1, pressing force in a direction where the pinion gear jumps into a ring gear 71; a displacement detection means (instantaneous displacement detection means 3) detecting displacement from a start position or a present position of jumping-in operation of the pinion gear 1 to a position where the pinion gear 1 is meshed with the ring gear 71; and a jumping-in operation speed automatic adjustment means 4 automatically adjusting a jumping-in operation speed to be faster as the pinion gear is nearer to the start position of the jumping-in operation and to be slower as the pinion gear is nearer to an abutment position with the ring gear 71.
