PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To successively read document in a suitable order, irrespective of the orientation of an image surface of each document, by switching over document carrying routes for carrying the document depending on the orientation of the image surface of the document mounted on a document mounting tray, thereby reducing the burden on a user for knowing the orientation of the image surface of the document laid on the tray, etc., while avoiding enlarging and complicating an image forming apparatus and avoiding its cost increase, etc. SOLUTION: A first document carrying route 43 shown with a dashed line and a second document carrying route 44 shown with a solid line are laid in parallel. Switching means composed of a first, second and third branching claws 45, 46, 52 are disposed to distribute document between the first and the second carrying routes 43, 44 for carrying them. The branching claws 45, 46, 52 are switched over to select the document carrying route 43, 44, based on the orientation of an image surface of the document laid on a document mounting tray 42.
