PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing polyphenylene ether, by which the polyphenylene ether can efficiently be produced in improved productivity. SOLUTION: This method for producing the polyphenylene ether is characterized by using at least two solvents as polymerization solvents, wherein at least one polymerization solvent among the polymerization solvents is not compatible with the other polymerization solvent at 40°C and the solubility of at least one polymerization solvent in water is≥5 wt. % at 40°C.
