PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine control device for preventing overheat of a catalyst even when abnormality is caused at restoring time from a resting state of a cylinder in an engine having a cylinder resting mechanism. SOLUTION: The engine having the cylinder resting mechanism prohibits a fuel cut up to completing restoring processing of the resting state of the cylinder at restoring time to an operation state from the resting state of the cylinder. At restoring time from the resting state of the cylinder, when starting operation after becoming a still temporarily resting state when abnormality is caused in an intake valve, fuel injected at resting time is discharged to the exhaust side as excessive fuel. When performing the fuel cut at the same time of this discharge, air causing no combustion by the fuel cut is discharged to the exhaust side. As a result, the catalyst generates reaction by the excessive fuel and the air, and has risk of causing overheat. Then, when requiring the fuel cut when restoring a resting cylinder, the fuel cut is prohibited up to completing the restoring processing. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
