PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a catalyst for polymerizing a polar vinyl monomer, an aromatic hydrocarbon-based vinyl monomer and/or an olefin and to provide a method for producing the polymer using the polymerization catalyst. SOLUTION: The polymerization catalyst useful for polymerizing the polar vinyl monomer, the aromatic hydrocarbon-based vinyl monomer and/or the olefin comprises a cobalt complex containing a terdentate nitrogen ligand. The method for producing the polymer comprises polymerizing the polar vinyl monomer, the aromatic hydrocarbon-based vinyl monomer and/or the olefin in the presence of the polymerization catalyst.
