PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water-based pigment microparticle dispersion with a hard-to-disperse pigment such as hydrophobic one microdispersed in an aqueous dispersion to a mean size of less than 100 nm with sharp size distribution and high dispersion stability with time, containing slight impurities, and to provide a method for producing the dispersion. SOLUTION: The method for producing the water-based pigment microparticle dispersion comprises the 1st step of mixing a to-be-treated pigment with an organic solvent to disperse the pigment therein and the 2nd step of mixing the resultant pigment with an aqueous dispersion to disperse the pigment therein.
