PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To excellently read picture information at all the time all over areas from low illuminance of a house to high illuminance with a wide dynamic range in the case of high illuminance without lowering a sensitivity even when an image is read and scanned at high speed and without being affected by an afterimage in the case of low illuminance. SOLUTION: In the line image sensor which uses an MOS type photo-sensor circuit for pixels, an MOS type line image sensor having logarithmic output characteristics and an MOS type line image sensor having linear output characteristics are provided together to photograph the same image. The line image sensor is provided with a means for selecting the output of the MOS type line image sensor having the linear output characteristics in the case of the low illuminance when a quantity of incident light is lower than a predetermined value, and for selecting an output of the MOS type line image sensor having the logarithmic output characteristics in the case of the high illuminance when a quantity of incident light is higher than a predetermined valuei.
