PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a soft magnetic steel sheet having the workability suitable for manufacturing of wound cores for alternators of antomobiles, etc., and having excellent characteristics and a method for manufacturing the same. SOLUTION: The soft magnetic steel sheet contains, by mass %,≤0.005% C,≤0.05% Si, 0.1 to 0.5% Mn, 0.01 to 0.15% P,≤0.01% S, 0.1 to 1.0% sol.Al,≥0.005% N, and the balance Fe and impurities, has a sheet-metal gage 0.1 to <0.5 mm, and a yield point 150 to 250 MPa, and has the excellent workability and magnetic characteristics in a high-frequency region. The method for manufacturing the soft magnetic steel sheet comprises subjecting a steel slab having the above composition to hot rolling and cold rolling to obtain a sheet metal having a sheet-metal gage 0.1 to <0.5 mm, then subjecting the steel sheet to skinpass rolling after annealing. Further, the method for manufacturing the soft magnetic steel sheet having the workability and the magnetic characteristics in the high-frequency region comprises confining Si in the composition to≤0.15% and performing annealing prior to the skinpass rolling in a box annealing furnace in a hydrogen atmosphere of 100%.
