PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal medium based on a mixture of polar compounds having positive dielectric anisotropy. SOLUTION: There is provided the liquid crystal medium comprising one or more of compounds shown by formula I (wherein r is 0 or 1; Q<SP>1</SP>is -CH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>- or a single bond; A is 1,4-phenylene or trans-1,4-cyclohexylene; L is H or F; R is an alkyl, alkoxy, oxa-alkyl, fluoroalkyl, or alkenyl each of which has carbon atoms not exceeding seven; and X is F, CF<SB>3</SB>, OCF<SB>3</SB>, or OCF<SB>2</SB>H) and a specified compound.
