[Also in Division B1] In blood oxygenating apparatus oxygen is bubbled through a rising column of blood which then passes into a defoaming chamber, where it is contacted with a surface-active defoaming agent, and thence to a filtering chamber, and each transfer from one chamber to the next takes place below the surface of a steadily maintained blood level. In the apparatus described, blood is introduced through a passageway 40 which is surrounded by a porous membrane 27 through which oxygen is supplied under pressure, so as to pass up through the column of blood in the tube 13 in the form of fine bubbles. The oxygenated blood passes out of the upper part 14 of the tube 13 and downwards through defoaming material 17, which comprises polymeric dimethyl siloxane and silicon dioxide, to an outlet duct 25. This leads into a rectangular chamber 11 which is divided into two compartments by a vertical filter screen 44a, so that the blood flows through the screen to the second compartment. Communicating ducts at the rear then lead the blood into a second, similar filter chamber 12 and so to the outlet 38. In each case the communicating passages between adjacent compartments are below the blood level 74, so as to avoid the transference of foam. Excess oxygen and carbon dioxide pass out of the system through orifices 19, 35, 36, all of which are provided with filter plugs. |
