Selective hydrogenation of alkynes in presence of alkenes is effected with a catalyst composition comprising an oxide of Co or Ni and an oxide of a Group VIa metal (e.g. Cr or Mo) supported on a carrier consisting predominantly of anhydrous alpha-alumina of surface area not more than 5 m2/g . The carrier may contain e.g. 5.15% of other oxides such as silica, titania, iron oxides and alkali and alkaline earth metal oxides. In examples, acetylene was removed from a gas stream containing methane, ethylene, propylene, hydrogen, butadiene (or propadiene) and carbon monoxide and optionally oxygen or carbon dioxide.ALSO:Selective hydrogenation of alkynes in presence of alkenes is effected with a catalyst composition comprising an oxide of Co or Ni and an oxide of a Group VIa metal (e.g. Cr or Mo) supported on a carrier consisting predominantly of anhydrous alpha-alumina of surface area not more than 5 m.2/g. The catalysts may be regenerated using, e.g., 5% air-95% steam at 850 DEG F. for 4 hours. |
