High molecular weight crystalline polyolefins, e.g polypropylene, are washed in the effective absence of air and water with an alcoholic solution of an alkali or alkaline earth metal derivative of an aliphatic polyhydroxy alcohol, e.g. 0.005-1% of a composition and in an amount such as to neutralize the acidity developed by the catalyst decomposition and to act as a purifier and stabilizer, e.g. an excess of 1-10 times with respect to the chemically equivalent amount needed to neutralize the free acidity. The metal derivative may be mono- or disodium or calcium glycolate, propylene glycolate or glycerate and may be in solution in the corresponding polyhydroxy alcohol. The alcohol may be a C 1- 10 alcohol, e.g. glycol, glycerol, methanol or isopropanol. The metal compound may be left in the polymer by not completely removing it during washing, or added before drying as a solution or powder to the solid polymer. The catalyst may be Al(C2H5)3.TiCl3. |
