The device has a coaxial waveguide structure into which HF electrical energy is coupled and an ignition pin protruding into a combustion chamber of an engine cylinder. A microwave plasma is produced at the protruding end by a high voltage. An axial inner electrode can be subjected to direct or low-frequency voltage by electrical coupling and has a HF coupling to the coaxial waveguide structure near the tip facing the combustion chamber. The device has a coaxial waveguide structure (7,8) into which high frequency electrical energy is coupled and an ignition pin (5) protruding into the relevant combustion chamber of a cylinder of the engine, whereby a microwave plasma is produced at the protruding end by a high voltage. The device has an axial inner electrode (2) that can be subjected to a direct or low-frequency voltage (3) by electrical coupling and that has a high frequency coupling to the coaxial waveguide structure near the tip facing the combustion chamber.
