The system for sealing a piston rod consists of two seals located one behind the other and installed in respective grooves in a housing enclosing the piston rod. A pressure compensating connection controlled by a shut-off component exists between the space (21) bounded by the two seals (14,15), and the chamber (22) on the piston rod side enclosed by the cylinder (3) and lying beneath the piston (4) and in its pressure-relieved state. The shut-off component is opened in the pressure-relieved state of the chamber and closed in its pressurized state. An Independent claim is included for a procedure for the sealing of a piston rod by means of the proposed sealing system.
