PURPOSE: A text input apparatus and a method therefor are provided to reduce time taken for inputting a text by making multiple characters correspond to virtual keys and inputting every character by pressing a key two times to its maximum. CONSTITUTION: An inputting unit(110) provides multiple character keys mounted on a certain board, generates a key input signal corresponding to a pressed character key and provides it to a controlling unit(140). A display unit(120) displays a current mode or characters inputted through the inputting unit(110). An information storing unit(130) stores certain information and a program for managing the information, and provides information and characters searched by a mode confirmation signal and a character select signal provided from the controlling unit(140) to the controlling unit(140). The controlling unit(140) searches the information storing unit(130) upon receiving key input signals sequentially generated by the inputting unit(110), and changes a mode of a mobile terminal according to mode conversion information outputted from an information manager or displays characters on the display unit(120).
