The doctor element (1.1) can be pressed on the running paper surface (2) to form a press gap (4). The counter pressure unit (5) exerts pressure on the doctor element at the height of the press gap exit. At the same time, it also exerts pressure on the paste or liquid remaining on the material surface after the wiping off and/or equalising. The counter pressure unit is connected to a fluid pressure generator (6) and can take the form of a standard air blade.
