An arrangement for quantitatively determining base number and/or water content of an operating fluid, especially oil in a machine, comprises a chamber system consisting of a reaction chamber section (8) and a measurement chamber (10). A pressure measurement unit (11) measures increases in pressure due to gaseous reaction products. A dosing piston (5) is used to adjust the sample volume of the operating fluid. The arrangement also has a double piston (1,2), comprising a working piston for introducing the sample to the reaction chamber, and a mixing piston for mixing the test fluid and the operating fluid. A control unit automatically determines the base number and water content.
