PURPOSE: A method for treating carbon tetrachloride is provided, to convert carbon tetrachloride into unharmful materials with producing useful by-products as well as improved conversion rate of carbon tetrachloride and selectivity of chloroform and low deactivation of a catalyst. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises the steps of mixing carbon tetrachloride with an aliphatic alcohol to obtain a carbon tetrachloride-alcohol mixture solution; and carrying out hydrodechlorination of the mixture solution in the presence of a catalyst at a temperature of 298-353 K to produce at least one selected from the group consisting of an acetal, aldehyde, alkyl vinyl ether and dialkyl carbonate and chloroform. Preferably the aliphatic alcohol is an aliphatic alcohol of C1-C4; and the catalyst is at least one metal selected from the group consisting of platinum, palladium and ruthenium. Preferably the catalyst is supported into or ion exchanged with at least one carrier selected from the group consisting of montmorillonite, activated carbon, MCM (Mobil Composition of Matter), SiO2, Al2O3, SiO2-Al2O3 and zeolite.
