PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for controlling a microwave oven having food menu shortcut keys are provided to easily select a food menu according to an automatic cooking mode. CONSTITUTION: A microwave oven has a plurality of cooking modes including an automatic cooking mode, a manual cooking mode, and a thaw mode. A plurality of food menu shortcut keys(22h) are formed to select one or more food menu from various food menu stored in a micro computer(35) in the automatic cooking mode. The micro computer stores a cooking process of the selected food menu in a predetermined address. A display unit(21) displays the food menu corresponding to the selected shortcut key and displays the cooking process of the selected food.
