The inlet lining is formed by tufts of metal wires combined into brushes (16). The brushes form a brush field which covers the rotor blade region of the axial compressor stage. The metal wire tufts which face the rotor blade ends (13) by their free ends engage at the opposite ends in corresponding grooves (15) of the stator (12) associated with the rotor (13).
