Process for controlling an air-conditioning system in a motor vehicle comprises switching between fresh air (FL), recirculating air (UL), and automatic fresh air/recirculating air control (AQS) by single or repeated actuation of the same switch. An Independent claim is also included for an actuating device for an air-conditioning system of a motor vehicle. Preferred Features: Repeated actuation in a period of less than 10 seconds selects the different states. A change between automatic fresh air/recirculating air control and recirculating air or a change between fresh air and recirculating air occurs on single actuation of the button. Pressing the button twice within the time period generates a change between automatic fresh air/recirculating air control and fresh air. A return to the starting situation occurs on pressing the button three times.
