A furnace for graphitizing carbon components located horizontally between contact electrodes, comprises an electricity supply at the furnace end, which is connected to the electrodes, and a pair of furnace bed sections with associated refractory walls. The furnace walls contain the contact electrodes (10), and tensioning members are mechanically connected to them, so the carbon components can be tensioned. The arrangement has at least two tensioning and pressurizing members (2,2'), which act on the carbon members (20,20'), and at least two further tensioning and pressurizing units (1,1') which are connected to longitudinal members (9,9') that are attached to a movable lateral beam (12).
