A motor includes a rotor 10 mounted on a shaft 18 for rotation about a stator 11. The rotor 10 includes a generally cylindrical wall 12a and a rotor top 12b which generally closes the cylinder of the rotor wall. The rotor 10 is connected to the motor shaft 18 by a connecting device 20 which is received within an opening in the rotor top 12b and has an aperture, which may be splined, to receive the shaft 18. In use, the connecting device 20 grips the rotor top 12b by means of radially outwardly extending formations 21b and 21c. A toothed washer (spring washer) 22 improves grip. The connecting device 20 is supplied with the material which will make up the formation 21b forming a continuation of the cylindrical body portion 21a. During manufacture, the cylindrical portion 21a of connecting device 20 is inserted through the opening in the rotor top 12b, the washer 22 is mounted, the shaft 18 is inserted and the connecting device 20 is then mechanically deformed, e.g. by peening or forging, to clamp the rotor. Also disclosed is the reduction of noise and damping of vibration, by means of forming the rotor from a layered material comprising two sheets of metal separated by a layer of visco-elastic material. |
