The gas bag (10) has a closable outflow orifice (40) in the gasbag cover (15) and a control belt (60) which as the gas bag inflates closes the initially open outflow orifice on reaching a predetermined unfolding state. One end (70) of the control belt is fixed on the gasbag cover near the outflow orifice and the other end (80) is connected to the cover so that on reaching the predetermined unfolded state the belt inverts the part of the cover near the orifice into the gas bag so that this then closes the orifice.
