PURPOSE: An Ethernet interface apparatus having a bandwidth control function and its method are provided to minimize a frame loss in an Ethernet network by defining a traffic variable and applying the variable to every network element to control the bandwidth. CONSTITUTION: When an Ethernet frame reaches an Ethernet interface apparatus from a subscriber terminal(100), an MAC band controller determines whether the Ethernet frame satisfies a PER(Peak Ethernet Rate)(101). If the Ethernet frame satisfies the PER, the MAC band controller outputs the frame to a Tx Ethernet frame buffer and updates a PER algorithm(102). If the Ethernet frame does not satisfy the PER, the MAC band controller determines whether the Ethernet frame satisfies an EBR(Excess Burst Rate)(103). If the Ethernet frame satisfies the EBR, the MAC band controller performs a shaping function and updates the PER algorithm(104). If the Ethernet frame does not satisfy the EBR, the MAC band controller performs a polishing/scheduling function without updating the PER algorithm(105).
