The log (1) is moved at a known speed past a photographing station. The photographing station consists of a plane of light (4.1), that transects the direction of travel of the log, and a video camera (3) set at an angle. A computer (6) calculates and collects sequential images of a group of surface points. The co-ordinates of each point are calculated from the geometry of the photograph. The log is transported on a conveyor while the plane of light intersects the imagined plane of movement of the log at right angles. A sub-group of points of the cross-section is interpolated at regular intervals longitudinally along the log.
