Velocity based method for controlling a hydraulic system

The method involves requesting a desired velocity for a hydraulic actuator e.g. cylinder (16). A pressure that varies with changes of force acting on the actuator is sensed. An equivalent flow coefficient describing fluid flow through a hydraulic circuit branch is derived based on the desired velocity and the sensed pressure. Fluid in a hydraulic system (10) is controlled based on the flow coefficient. An independent claim is also included for a method of operating an electro hydraulic proportional valve that is connected in series with a hydraulic actuator in a hydraulic circuit branch.
