<p>An electro-optical device capable of modulating amplitude or phase of optical output in response to electrical data or control signal, or of switching it, is attributed with discontinuity in body of electro-optically active material or electrode(s) (6,7,8,16,17,18), such that the direction of electro-optic effect is reversal for a portion of length of device at or near its downstream end. An electro-optical device capable of modulating the amplitude or phase of an optical output in response to an electrical data or control signal, or of switching it, comprises a body of electro-optically active material; waveguides for passing light through the body; and electrodes for applying an electric field with a frequency in the microwave region to the body, the transverse geometry of the device being such as to maintain adequate phase velocity matching between optical and microwave frequencies. A discontinuity is attributed in the body or the electrode(s), such that the direction of the electro-optic effect is reversal for a portion of the length of the device at or near its downstream end.</p> |
