Acoustical panel coating and process of applying same

A coating composition comprises filler particles having an average particle size of 100-600 mu m and present in an amount of 35-90 wt.% on a dry solid basis; a binder; and a liquid carrier. It has a solids content of 50-85%. Independent claims are also included for: (a) an acoustical panel, comprising a substrate having a backing surface and a facing surface that is free of punch holes, wheel abrasions, embossing and erosion; and a coating composition (18) applied to the facing surface; (b) a coated scrim (14), comprising a scrim (16); and a coating composition applied to the scrim; (c) a suspended ceiling system, comprising a grid; acoustical panels suspended by the grid; and a coated scrim suspended in the grid; and (d) a method of applying a coating to a substrate, comprising spraying the coating composition from a high-volume, low-pressure spray apparatus onto a porous substrate; and drying the coated substrate. The substrate has a thickness of =0.75 inch. The coated substrate has an NRC (sic) value of >=0.5 and a texture value of >=20 ml/ft2>. The coated scrim and the resulting coated substrate have an airflow resistance of 600-900 mks rayls and a texture value of 20-65 ml/ft2>. Each acoustic panel has a texture value of 20-65 ml/ft2>.
