After passing through the roller assembly the material falls onto a sorting table (10) subjected to a blast of air from a nozzle controlled by an electromagnetic valve (16). There is a capacitive sensor (18) under the sorting table, connected to a computer. A blast of air from the nozzle blows selected items into a perforated collector hood (14) and a bag (15). The material to be sorted is put into a hopper (1) with an item singling system (2). This consists of an upper pair (3) of identical rollers (5) with spiral arrangements of vanes (6). The lower pair of rollers (4) consists of a plain roller (7) adjacent to a smaller diameter roller (8) with a spiral arrangement of vanes (9). A video camera (19) looks at the output from the roller system and is connected to a computer.
