A technique is provided for enabling an index to data recorded in a recording medium such as a cassette to be read out without mounting the recording medium on a reproduction apparatus to reproduce the data. When a cassette (100) is inserted into a VTR (41), a reader/writer reads out information on data from a memory card mounted on the cassette for recording the data through an antenna. With the cassette located outside, on the other hand, the reader/writer reads out the information from the memory card through another antenna.
