Manufacture of a linear or cyclic lactic acid oligomer mixture comprising polymerizing a lactide in the presence of an alkali metal amine compound, is new. Manufacture of a linear or cyclic lactic acid oligomer mixture of formula (I) and (II) comprises polymerizing a lactide in the presence of a compound of formula (III). [Image]M-N(R1>)(R2>) (III) m : an integer of 1-30; n : an integer of 1-30; M : an alkali metal; R1>->2>an aliphatic or aromatic group. An independent claim is also included for the linear or cyclic lactic acid oligomer mixture produced.
