Method and system for generating digital image files for a limited display

The method involves quantizing a display-sized image to display palette and compressing the image to produce a compressed image having a file size. The resized image is simplified by reducing an image detail to produce a simplified image if the size is greater than both a maximum file size and a predetermined file size. The above steps are repeated on the simplified image until the file size is less than the maximum size. The file size is reduced by decreasing error diffusion rate by a predetermined amount if the file size is greater than the maximum file size but less than the predetermined file size. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a system for rendering and compressing a digital image for display on a display device and transmission on a transmission channel (b) a computer storage medium having instructions for causing a computer to perform the method.
