Materials and method for making splayed layered materials

A splayed material comprises layered material splayed with particle having diameter of = 3 mu m. Independent claims are also included for: (1) an article comprising matrix and a layered material splayed with polymeric particles dispersed in a medium; and (2) a method of preparing a nanocomposite comprising preparing a particle by combining an emulsion polymerization monomer and a surfactant dispersible in a medium, mixing the particle with layered material dispersed in the medium, and splaying the layered material to produce the nanocomposite.
