Polymers of butadiene are made by contacting 1,3-butadiene with a polymerization catalyst formed on mixing a compound of the formula RM, where R is alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl, or alkaryl, and M is sodium or potassium with titanium tetraiodide. The polymerization is preferably carried out in an inert solvent or diluent. A portion of the tetraiodide may be replaced by titanium tetrachloride. The catalyst may be preformed or formed in situ. The polymerization may be carried out continuously, and the product purified by conventional techniques. The organometallic compound may be methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, tert-butyl, n-amyl, decyl, cyclopentyl, cyclohexyl, methylcyclohexyl, phenyl, p-tolyl, 2,4-diethylphenyl, or benzyl sodium, or the analogous potassium compounds. The units of the polybutadiene have a cis, 1,4-configuration. |
