A process in which an oligomerization catalyst comprising a regular porous silica having a pore diameter of 2 to 10 nm and nickel supported thereon is produced by the template ion-exchange method. Use of the catalyst enables the highly selective production of butene, hexene, or propylene from ethylene in a gas phase. When a slight amount of water is coexistent in the reaction system, the activity in the reaction is highly improved. The amount of the nickel supported is 1,000 to 5 in terms of Si/Ni. The amount of the water to be added is 0.001 to 1 mol per mol of the ethylene. Thus, butene, hexene, or propylene can be efficiently produced without the necessity of using a high reaction pressure. |
