Access control method, especially for use with public transport automatic barriers, in which access is granted by maintaining automatic barriers open. The method includes the following steps: the number of valid access tickets is counted; the number of persons passing the barriers is counted; a fraud alarm is generated if the number of tickets is less than the number of persons having passed through the barriers. An Independent claim is made for an access control device with an arrangement of sensors for detecting more that one person passing through the barriers on a single ticket.
