A method and a connector arrangement for connecting and disconnecting a generator to a circuit with an existing alternating current

To connect an alternator 10, driven by a Stirling engine, to the alternating current mains supply 20, switches 51, 52 are closed to connect the low impedance 41 (10ohms) across the alternator output terminals to stall the engine as the engine heats up. When the engine is ready to drive the alternator the switch 51 is opened and the switch 43 is closed to increase the impedance and allow the alternator to start movement of the engine. Eventually switch 31 is closed and switch 43 is opened to allow direct connection between the mains supply and the alternator via metered short circuit path 30. To disconnect the alternator from the mains supply the heat is removed from the engine and when the engine has cooled sufficiently that current is being drawn from the mains by the alternator, the impedance 41 is switched across the alternator by closing of the switches 51, 52 and the alternator is disconnected from the mains supply by opening of the switch 31.
