A process for preparing bicyclic 1,3-diketones of formula (I) comprising reacting a bicyclic olefin of formula (II) with haloform in the presence of a base to give formula (III), hydrolyzing formula (III) to the allyl alcohol of formula (IV) then hydrolyzing this to the unsaturated ketone of formula (V), reacting the ketone with a nucleophilic ion to give the ketone of formula (VI) and then hydrolyzing this to the bicyclic 1,3-diketones of formula (I).
