The position of the camshaft relative to a reference position is determined and as a function of the actual position and from the set position an actuator control signal is deduced. In order to determine this signal account is taken of a control component previously determined from the measurable state quantities characterizing the operation of the camshaft actuator. This component is determined from the state quantities representing the state of the hydraulic liquid producing the activating movement of the camshaft actuator.
